I love this time of year, the days get a little longer and the temperature (hopefully) goes up a degree or two, as memories of the worst of the winter start to fade. And there is the anticipation of another great year of classic sport just around the corner. From what I’ve seen so far, 2010 should be a belter. Read Graham Lawlor’s great season preview on page 74 and you’ll get some idea what I mean.
It’s almost become tradition for us to start our year with a drop of Florida sunshine, and a visit to Daytona Bike Week. While the main event at the banked stadium may not be the international star studded event it once was, the atmosphere created by all those legends that took on the banking in years past, still lives on. For me just driving through the tunnel into the in field gives me a buzz.
Events at the Daytona Speedway kick off with the AHRMA classic races – something I really look forward to – and a chance to catch up with a few of our American readers. The great classic racing is almost a bonus. I know I’ve said it before, but I just find their uncomplicated approach to what constitutes a classic race bike so refreshing.
I’m not sure how many Brits will be crossing the pond this year, apart from the evergreen Les Trotter, who has managed to fix up what should be a competitive ride, but I always come away thinking it would be great to see more taking on our American cousins again in their own back yard.
It was my plan to bring you the story of the Moto Cinelli TT2 Ducati and its return to 1984 livery, but with parts still scattered around the country, it will have to wait until the next issue at best. The good news is that progress is being made, and at the risk of spoiling the tale, having people who were associated with our Moto Cinelli race effort way back then helping out again has added to my pleasure.
Enjoy this packed issue and the season to come.
