I would have to say it’s been an up and down start to the year. My news pages in this issue carry far too many obituaries. It was a genuine shock to hear of the passing of Colin Armes. Colin was a man of principle and someone never afraid to make a decision, and stand by it.
Of course this didn’t always please everybody, but you don’t hold your hand up for a job like Colin’s if you haven’t got a backbone. Personally I got on with Colin really well (I’ve been known to speak my mind occasionally too) and have massive respect for what he and Marie have given to the sport we love.
The highs couldn’t have been much better. In an age when awards are given out because an athlete can run quite fast or jump a long way, this January’s New Year Honours list contained the names of three fantastic people who, like Colin and Marie, have dedicated thousands of hours, for no reward other than the satisfaction you get from putting something back, to motorcycling.
So, hearty congratulations to Wyn Evans MBE, Agnes Cadger BEM and Colin Appleyard MBE, from all at Classic Racer.
I had my own honour over the holiday period too, when I was granted honorary membership of Amicale. The organisation was set up to preserve, and use, genuine Grand Prix machinery from the past and the membership is made up of owners of some of the best collections in the world.
To receive the news from the president Bernard Girardot-Miglierina that French former Grand Prix ace Jean-François Balde and I had been given this honour was wonderful news and a great way to start the year.
Enjoy this varied issue.
